Retired Community Psychiatric Nurse

Gwen trained as a state registered nurse in 1962 at Bishop Auckland then worked as a staff nurse and relief sister at Dryburn Hospital until 1966. She then went to Winterton Hospital to train as a registered mental nurse where she worked as a staff nurse and ward sister until 1972, when with family commitments she changed to working as a District Nurse gaining the National District Nursing Diploma in 1973. Later that year she began working as a community psychiatric nurse initially in a huge area which was later cut down as more staff became community trained. She continued in this role until retirement in 1995. Gwen became a DASH committee member in 1983, and chairman in 1995 when she retired from nursing. She continued as chair until 2014 and now remains as a committee member.
