Some of our female residents have been taking advantage of a Durham University initiative to encourage exercise and improve fitness.

The Durham Community Outreach initiative encourages vulnerable adults to exercise and improve their fitness as well as making friends. With funding from the University and external funding through the Area Action Partnership, the Community Outreach project is able to facilitate gym sessions and boxing sessions which are being attended by some of our female residents living at the Vulnerable Women’s Project (VWP) in Gilesgate.

The University’s Lynn Preston, who manages the initiative says; “the project encourages people to exercise at our gym and to integrate with our students. We encourage this and facilitate fitness sessions and boxing. As this has previously been something taken up more by men, we are keen to engage with more women through the project. The women from the VWP have enjoyed the sessions we have facilitated and we are pleased that they are getting involved”.
